Vinyl covering for walls or wallpaper, which solution?

July 28, 2022

You can opt for wallpaper, which is a good way of showing specific patterns on your walls. Then, you can opt for a vinyl covering for walls, which offers a textured look with very easy installation.

What is the difference between a vinyl wall covering and wallpaper?

The traditional wallpaper

When we talk about "traditional wallpaper", the first image that comes to mind is probably a very rustic wallpaper, typically the one our grandmothers had in their living room. When we talk about "traditional wallpaper", it actually means that it is not self-adhesive.

The application of traditional wallpaper requires the preparation of an adhesive before the wallpaper is applied to the wall. For most wallpapers, the glue must be applied with a brush to the back of the paper or directly to the wall. In any case, all of these methods require extra effort and can be messy, depending on your skills.

The vinyl covering for walls

Adhesive covering or adhesive vinyl has a self-adhesive backing. This type of wallcovering is designed to be installed and removed quickly and easily.

You can apply this vinyl covering to your walls like a sticker, allowing you to put it on, take it off and move it around. And unlike a more traditional technique, using vinyl on your walls does not require much preparation beforehand.

Applying wallpaper and vinyl covering to your walls

The biggest difference between these two renovation/decoration solutions is in the installation. The only similarities between wallpaper and adhesive wallcovering are that you need to cut the paper to size, use a level to ensure a straight fit, and remove any bubbles with a squeegee.

In the case of a traditional wallpaper application, the first step (depending on your product) will be to remove the wallpaper that is currently on your walls.

Next, you will need to protect your floors and potentially your furniture and prepare the glue (which often has an unpleasant odor).

Finally, you apply the adhesive and then align the wallpaper strips. If necessary, you can slide the paper along the wall to bring it up to the edge of the previous room or to straighten it.

With vinyl covering for walls, installation is quicker and, above all, cleaner.
